Reading Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin has been a long time coming. I have had this book for several years, and it has been recommended to me on countless occasions. It often gets recommended after people hear that I am a theology nerd, because they know I will love it. And all of you who have recommended this book to me over the years: you were right. I read it. I loved it. I appreciated it. And I want to give it to every Christian woman I meet.
Women of the Word, while a quick read, is more than your typical “book about the Bible for women.” Wilkin seeks not to feed women information about God and the Bible, but rather to equip them with the tools to study the Bible for themselves. In a day where Bible studies and books are written for women to spoon-feed them bad theology, Wilkin’s take is refreshing.
In just a few short chapters discusses the right and wrong ways to study the Bible. She also outlines an excellent method for studying passages of Scripture. Taking the time to pore over Scripture with a pen to take notes and a highlighter, reading through the passage over and over again, picking out key words and phrases that get repeated, and so on will provide a richer understanding of Scripture than reading Christian books and just reading through the Bible without stopping ever could. Becoming a woman of the word takes work, but it is oh so worth it.
Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin gets 5/5 stars.
