Catechism Mondays: Week 4

Q: How and why did God create us?

A: God created us male and female in his own image to know him, love him, live with him, and glorify. And it is right that we who were created by God should live to his glory.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

Who am I? Why am I here? What is the purpose of my life? These questions inquire of our identity, where we came from, what we’re even doing here. Every single person on earth wrestles with these questions. Our hearts yearn for purpose. They desire to find identity. We seek identity and purpose in what surrounds us and in what we do. But none of those things give lasting identity or purpose. It’s all temporary. It all goes away.

So who are we? We are God’s creation. We were created in his image and we cannot help but be like him. We were created, male and female. Why did God create us? We were created for his glory. So we could know him. So we could love him. So we could enjoy his presence forever. Our chief end, our primary purpose above all else is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. He created us in his image, male and female, so that we could love him, know him, and give him glory all of the days of our lives.
